The PHQ‐9 was completed by 6,000 patients in 8 primary care clinics and 7 obstetrics‐gynecology clinics. The PHQ-9 is the nine item depression scale of the patient health questionnaire.* It is one of the most validated tools in mental health and can be a powerful tool to assist clinicians with diagnosing depression and monitoring treatment response. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) is a brief and valid screen for use in cancer populations. The PHQ-9 distinguishes both the presence and severity of depression. 27 The Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) screen is another valid measure with low respondent burden that can be facilely integrated into routine history taking. 28
